Dude, That's Gnarly (Head Zin)
Or welcome to my blog for the newbies!

This month's special coupon wine

Lovely cheese, friendly farmer!

With Zin? I don't know either.

It's my second month blogging merrily merrily merrily, but welcome aboard to any newbies who have come here from this week's email blast.

Also, if you haven't checked it out yet, there's a new coupon *doing happy coupon dance*. This month, it's for $2 off your favorite meat when you buy a bottle of Gnarly Head wine.

I'd humbly suggest the big Lodi Zin, perhaps with some barbecued chicken or ribs. Mmm. Ribs.

Or use it as part of our August Wine Party Menu of Zin & 'Cue.

But, Alyssa, that wine party looks like a lot of work, you say.

To which I say, pop the cork on six bottles and make just one recipe (your friends are there for the wine, after all). Or just grab some great cheeses from our Deli. With Zin, I'd suggest big Cheddars, like Fiscalini San Joaquin Gold, Denhay Farmhouse, Black Diamond and/ or Kerrygold Aged Cheddar.

Yes, I have a cheese problem. (You might also try it with Smoked Wensleydale, which is my current favorite cheese, and Abbot's Gold, which is English Cheddar with caramelized onions, which also makes my greatest hits list.)

I hear you can also pair Zin with a blue cheese like Point Reyes. Having not personally tried it, I cannot recommend it to you. But if you feel adventurous, let me know how it turns out, 'kay?

If Zin's not your bag, they also have a Cab, Merlot and Chardonnay.

The coupon's good until the 26th - that gives you plenty of time to think about it, right?

Note: Not all cheeses are at all stores, so ask the friendly Deli folks or the store's cheese expert (cheesemonger, if you want to get fancy) what they recommend.

My favorite cheese of late to pair with Zin is aged Gouda. Not smoked, mind you. Not all places have this lovely delight yet, but the Raleys on Floyd in Modesto carries a lovely aged Gouda. Oh my goodness!! Grab a loaf of French bread and get ready to go to your happy place! Not to disparage Gnarly Head, which I do enjoy, but I've got to mention another amazing Zin that I discovered at the local Raleys... OZV (Old Zin Vines) by Oak Ridge Winery. Amazing!! It has some lovely jammy notes and goes down so smoothly. I've bought several bottles and will probably go back for more. I've shared it with friends who also say it's lovely. Of course, now that I say this, I realize I have to head out now and buy more before others find out about this delightful Zin.  -  (commuterqueen 08/06/08 @ 09:37 AM)
Abbot's Gold cheese is FANTASTIC. I am a big fan. I am looking forward to trying it with some Gnarly Head Zin. I have seen the label in the stores but now that I have a recommendation for it, why not give it a try! Thanks Alyssa!  -  (jmendenh 08/06/08 @ 10:52 AM)
we have a great selection of wines that are in the clarksburg region one is Herringers and they have exellent reds and whites. I see that the nugget stores have large displays you have none. There are now 6 in the old sugar mill and several others in the area.  -  (novakpt 08/06/08 @ 10:56 AM)
Welcome aboard, folks! Commuterqueen: OK, now I totally have to try that. OZV is a great wine - I recently had it with chili on the store wine guy's suggestion. JMendenh: I'll look for you with a cart full of Abbot's Gold. :) Novakpt: I'll pass that info onto our "Smart Guy Wine Buyer." Thanks for the tip!  -  (alulie 08/06/08 @ 03:18 PM)
Suggestion for Clarksburg wines - Wilson Vineyards has some fun selections.I don't know if all Raley's carry them, but mine in South Sacramento does. Here's another thought, I say if you're hosting the Wine Party and getting the wine, make your friends bring the BBQ. That's my plan. :)  -  (SassySipper 08/07/08 @ 11:36 AM)
Hi, I was just looking at your recipes and the Raspberry Chipotle Ribs look delicious but the directions are for the BBQ'd chicken. Would you mind writing the directions for the Raspberry Chipotle Ribs as a comment hear?  -  (kjbtiger 08/07/08 @ 04:22 PM)
Sassy Sipper, That is a great idea! I have also tried giving each attending partier a wine to bring. Since Alyssa's pick are very reasonable no one seems to mind, plus, everyone feels like they did their part!  -  (jmendenh 08/07/08 @ 04:22 PM)
please correct the recipe for raspberry chipotle ribs. the second sentence includes instructions for the chicken recipe, not the ribs.  -  (parfaitmom 08/07/08 @ 04:23 PM)
There are too many good cheeses to list! I've had Point Reyes blue and it's great. It's perfect on a fruit plate or over a salad. Guess adding cheese to a salad defeats the point, huh? Oh well!  -  (jennieanne 08/11/08 @ 12:11 PM)
