8 More Top Travel Spots from our readers.

Wright's Lake, off Hwy. 50 about 4 miles past Kyburz See map.
(Mary Durham, West Sacramento, Calif.) "This is one of my favorite spots. Small campground, rafting and small boats, picnicking and hiking trails."

Sundial Bridge in Redding, Calif. See directions.
(Cynthia Bass, Danville, Calif.) "This bridge is beautiful any time of year, but it 'does its thing' on 6/21 at 1 p.m., casting a perfect shadow exactly where it is supposed to. There is always a small group of people waiting from about 12:45 onward, and when the shadow hits the marked stone, we all cheer. There's also a wonderful children-friendly museum very close to the bridge, plus an excellent cafe. Seeing the shadow fall exactly where it is supposed to on the first day of summer, and knowing the bridge was built for this one moment once a year, really is something to behold."

Gizdich Ranch in Watsonville, Calif. See directions.
(Julie Engelhardt, Hollister, Calif.) "From May to September we can visit this pleasant little hide-away and have a real 'field day' picking strawberries, ollalieberries, boysenberries, raspberries, blackberries, and applies--depending upon what time of year you visit. They also have a barn area where you can sit at picnic tables and eat your lunch, a shop that sells mouth-watering pies, and a cute antique store where you can pick up tokens from days gone by. One of their best-know events is the Apple Butter Festival in October, where you can take a hay ride, wander through a pumpkin patch, see antique engines, and find out what it takes to make that delicious apple butter."

Bodie State Historic Park in Bodie, Calif., northeast of Yosemite See directions.
(Patricia Nelson, Vallejo, Calif.) "The ghost town of Bodie was once a bustling mining town with a population of nearly 10,000 by 1879. It was one of the toughest and most lawless gold mining camps in the West. Even though Bodie was devastated by fire in the 1930's, 170 buildings still exist, in an "arrested state of decay." Maybe what is so interesting is that the population seems to have just picked up and left one day, leaving plates on the table and broken glass in the streets."

Heavenly Valley Gondola in South Lake Tahoe, Calif. See map.
(Joanne Kloepfer, Genoa, Nev.) "My favorite location on a hot summer day. I usually buy a reduced ski pass in July so the gondola is included. I stop at the Raley's Deli and get the gourmet lunch supplies, including champagne. Then I zoom up to the top of the mountain. Sitting at the picnic table, I am on top of the world looking out at the whole Tahoe Lake and Basin. What a special and thrilling experience for a 'secret' lunch!"

Great Gatsby Festival at Tallac Historic Site, on Hwy. 89, just west of South Lake Tahoe, Calif. See map.
(Sharon Dal Porto, Sacramento, Calif.) "What better month than August to leave behind the heat of Sacramento? The turn-of-the-century vacation homes of several wealthy Bay Area and Southern California businessmen, including the 1894 Pope Estate, are open for tours led by costumed docents. Vintage clothing and antique cars are on display on the shaded grounds. Strolling through the lakeside Tallac Historic Site is a calming respite from the hurried pace of today's modern world. I can already smell the pine trees..."

Subway Cave, east of Redding, Calif. on Hwy. 41 See directions.
(Sharon Carbaugh, Shasta Lake, Calif.) "Grab a sandwich at Raley's deli, some fruit and bottled water and head out on Hwy. 41. Subway Cave is a lava tube and kids (big and little!) love it. In the summer, when it's over 100°F in the "flatlands," that lava tube is in the 60s or lower. Ahh - just feel that cool air! Don't forget your flashlight - it's pitch black, but you can't get lost, it's in and out and not too long. Then, pay a visit to the picnic area close by on Hat Creek, dangle your bare feet in the cold water and enjoy your lunch under the pine trees."

Point Bonita Lighthouse, near Sausalito, Calif. See directions.
(Archie Quinn, Folsom, Calif.) "It's quite a hike to get there, but this still active lighthouse is totally worth the effort. you can get extraordinary views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Pacific Ocean."
