Raley’s Receives Environmental Achievement Award

Raley's Energy Manager Accepts Award

Media Center: Press Release:
Raley's Receives Environmental Achievement Award from EPA's GreenChill Partnership
Award Earned for Refrigerant Emissions Reductions in Store Design and Maintenance

West Sacramento, Calif. (Sept. 20, 2011) — Raley’s Family of Fine Stores received a GreenChill Environmental Achievement Award for refrigerant emissions reductions at the Food Marketing Institute’s Energy & Store Development Conference in Atlanta, Ga. on Sept. 19, 2011.

Raley’s joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s GreenChill Partnership in 2009 and voluntarily committed to reducing refrigerant emissions to help fight climate change and protect the earth’s ozone layer. Since that time, Raley's has reduced its emissions rate by 10% and has received three gold-level store certification awards and six silver-level store certification awards.

"Raley's is an environmentally conscious retailer and has shared the EPA's commitment to decreasing emissions through efficient refrigeration systems for several years," said Randy Walthers, Raley's Energy Manager. “We look forward to continuing our work with the GreenChill Partnership on promoting green technologies, strategies and practices to protect the ozone layer and significantly reduce greenhouse gases.”

The EPA’s GreenChill Partnership works with supermarkets to reduce refrigerant emissions and decrease their impact on the ozone layer and climate change. The Partnership helps supermarkets transition to environmentally friendlier refrigerants; reduce harmful refrigerant emissions; and adopt greener refrigeration technologies and environmental best practices.

According to the EPA, GreenChill partner stores have refrigerant emissions rates nearly 50 percent lower than the EPA-estimated industry average. If every supermarket reduced its leak levels to the GreenChill average, the supermarket industry could save more than $100 million in refrigerant replacement costs and reduce emissions by about 22 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.

“Raley’s sought out every opportunity to stop refrigerant leaks and achieve ambitious, voluntary emissions reduction goals,” said Keilly Witman, Manager of EPA's GreenChill Partnership. “Customers can feel proud that Raley’s takes environmental protection seriously.”
