Raley's Presents Check to California State Parks Foundation To Keep Governor's Mansion Open
$75,000 Raised by Customers Through “NickelAid”

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Thanks to the efforts of Northern Californians participating in its NickelAid campaign, Raley’s raised $75,000 to support and enhance California State Parks.  A check from Raley’s was presented to Ruth Coleman, Director of California State Parks, at a special ceremony on the grounds of the historic Governor’s Mansion State Historic Park Wednesday evening to announce that the Governor’s Mansion is officially off the closure list.

NickelAid was launched last June at Raley’s, Bel Air and Food Source stores throughout Northern California.  Every time a shopper used a reusable grocery bag – paper, plastic or canvas – at any Raley’s, Bel Air or Food Source stores, the company donated 5 cents per bag to a special State Parks Foundation fund.  Raley’s absorbed all administrative fees related to the effort so 100% of the proceeds went to the California State Parks Foundation.

“On behalf of the Raley’s company, our employees and our customers, it is an honor to present this check knowing that this much-needed money will be put to immediate use to keep the Governor’s Mansion opened and operating,” said Jennifer Teel-Wolter, Community Relations Manager for Raley’s Family of Fine Stores. She added, “One year ago, we learned of the financial challenges facing California’s state parks and recreation areas and sought a way to help by offering NickelAid to our customers. Their response was overwhelming and it is clear our state’s parks hold a special place in all our hearts.”

Last August, Raley’s announced a similar fundraising program with the Nevada Division of State Parks when it announced a 60% reduction in its state general fund appropriation resulting in the elimination of some positions and the cutting of operating costs. In May, a check for $25,000 was presented to Nevada by Raley’s with the money being used to build a new trailhead at Lahontan State Recreational Area and purchasing new picnic tables for Sand Harbor State Park.
