Detox— Energize for Activity!

Natural Foods:  Detox- Energize for Activity!
Well for Life

Feel energized by focusing on what helps your body cleanse itself from external contaminants (or toxins). These build up from polluted air, water pollutants, pesticides, herbicides, solvents and other industrial and agricultural chemicals through every day exposure. Add to that chemicals we consume in processed foods and beverages and our bodies have a lot to deal with.  It’s important to keep our natural cleansing systems from being overly taxed.  Get more energized and establish some healthier eating patterns by doing a “detox” which supports our bodies natural cleansing, repair and healing systems.  There are many detox plans to explore and tailor to your needs.  Here are some basics to consider.

Avoid— white sugar, white flour, artificial sweeteners, and food additives.  Limit use of alcohol, and caffeine as too much can overtax the liver and adrenals.  Many detox plans range from 3—10 days. You can choose what works best for you.

Water is essential for proper body function and one of your best tools for weight control (great for your skin too!).  A good guide is to drink half your weight in ounces, every day (for example, a 150 lb woman would want to drink 75 ounces a day, or roughly 2 1/2 liters).  Find plain water a bit boring?  Try slicing some lemons and strawberries into your water, or grab some naturally fruit infused, HINT Waters, they are refreshingly flavorful with no sugar or preservatives.  Cut down or eliminate sodas, by trying HINT FIZZ waters.  Naturally carbonated, fruit flavored and refreshing with all the cleansing benefits because it’s pretty much just water.

Protein from mostly plant sources.  Legumes, nuts and seeds, even grains like quinoa and buckwheat are quality sources of protein that can minimize digestive stress.  Hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and nut and seed butters make great spreads and salad toppers; they are even good in soups.  Quinoa is considered a complete protein and is in many natural minimally processed products.  Try Sol Cuisine Quinoa Chia Burgerfor a great quick dinner (it’s in the Natural Freezer section).  Explore the many other tasty plant based meat alternatives in the freezer or refrigerated sections.

Veggies and Fruits—Eat lots of veggies and fruits.  Choose organic to avoid toxic pesticides.  Be sure to include cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, kale, cabbage and brussels sprouts.  These contain sulforaphane which helps the body produce glutathione, a critical antioxidant used by the liver to detoxify the body.  For a fun snack, try Wonderfully Raw Brussel Bytes, crunchy and delicious!

Supplements— Probiotics, Green tea extract, milk thistle, vitamin C and soluble fibers (like chia seeds) can provide important support to the body during a “cleanse”.
