Glasses of icewine - perfect with summer's best fruit Welcome:  What goes with churros?
| Thursday July 8, 2010

To spend some time chatting with me in person is to know I use churros to indicate anything random. I can't explain my addiction to the word with any reason (other than a childhood visit to Disneyland and the magic of that really big churro your mom let's you walk around the park with.)

Hang in there, this is going somewhere.

So last night, while considering possible food blog names, I thought of "what goes with churros?" Now while this sounds awesome when you say it loud..

*pausing to allow you to say it outloud*

..It makes a fairly cumbersome website name to read:
Whatgoeswithchurros.com

But it did get me thinking..what wine does go with churros?

And what wine goes with the other stuff in your fridge that no one talks about - like nectarines? Pluots? Hot dogs? Omelettes for dinner? That Freschetta pizza?

Enough about what wine goes with mushroom encrused tenderloin - what goes with chicken nuggets and tater tots?

Allow me to help, gentle reader:

Churros and other cinnamon delicious treats: Cinnamony desserts are made for th nutty sweetness of tawny port. But I think it would also rock with Patron Cafe, an intensely espresso-flavored liqueur. Bonus: it's yumtastic over ice cream and although I have not tried it, but am making a note to myself to do so, it would make a fab grown-up shake.

Nectarines, pluots and other summer tree fruit: Think icewine (if you don't mind the splurge) or muscat. The rule of thumb with desserts - even when it's just sweet summer fruit eaten out of hand - that the wine should be sweeter than the dessert
.

H
ot dogs: Well, it depends on your dog. For turkey, soy or veggie dogs - think New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc (Oyster Bay is a great price right now - 9.99!) The grassiness (think herbs) of the Sauv Blanc pairs nicely with the spices in non-beef dogs. For a beef or pork hot dog. Think a softer Zin. You don't want too much oomph taking away from your hot dog bliss, but enough fruit to stand up to the spice in your dogs (I highly recommend Caspers Hot Dogs in the Meat Dept. HIGHLY.)

Freschetta, DiGiorno and other frozen pizzas: pizza is always great with a Zin or Chianti. And both varietals come in varieties under $10, so you can have them ready when you are.

Eggs for dinner: Having an omelette? Then it's bubbly time, my friend. Yep, a bright bubbly with that humble "don't-feel-like-cooking-I'm-making-eggs" - it's a match made in chillaxing heaven.

Chicken nuggets and tater tots: Nothing pairs as nicely with fried foods as sparkling wine (the bubbles and acidity help cut through that fat). Plus it's a little luxury on a night when the kids - or just you - want nuggets again. You can splurge for about $10 with a wine like Freixenet  or Domaine Ste. Michelle.

Got more weeknight stumpers? I'd love to hear them!
