Ingredients

4 cups flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. sugar
1½ cups buttermilk
1/2 cup raisins
Directions

Prep: 20 minutes Cook: about 45 minutes 

1. Put 4 cups of flour in the bowl along with 1 tsp. each baking soda, salt and sugar. Mix this all together with a fork. Pour in 1½ cups of buttermilk and, if you want, 1/2 cup raisins.

2. Stir it really fast until everything comes together like a ball of clay. Knead it on a floured board for a few seconds, and then put it on a lightly floured baking sheet. Cut a deep cross on top, all the way down the sides. This lets the bread rise evenly. 
3. Bake at 425°F about 45 minutes until it 's nicely browned and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
 
Remember that the oven is hot, so be careful. You can put it on a rack to cool, but probably everyone will want to eat it right out of the oven. It tastes fantastic spread with lots of butter and your favorite jam. Because it's not very sweet, it makes a great dinner bread. Save some for your lunch box, too! ItZs wonderful the next day with breakfast, sliced thin and toasted.
