Ponche Navideño (Hot Fruit Punch)
Ponche Navideño (Hot Fruit Punch)
3 qts. water
3 oranges peel and white pith removed, chopped
2 Granny Smith apples peeled, cored and chopped
1 cup dried apricots chopped
1 cup raisins
1 piloncillo cone (in our Hispanic food aisle) or 1 cup packed brown sugar or more to taste
3 cinnamon sticks
1½ tsp. whole cloves
Brandy or rum (optional)

There is a custom in Mexico to serve this punch to guests during the nine days of Las Posadas. Make it your own by substituting your favorite fruits, dried or fresh. Serve with a spoon – it’s very thick!

20 minutes, Cook: 1 hour, Makes: 10 cups

1. Place water, oranges, apples, apricots, raisins and piloncillo or brown sugar in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for 30 minutes.

2. Wrap cinnamon and cloves in cheesecloth and add to pot; simmer for 30 minutes more and discard cinnamon and cloves. Add brandy or rum to taste, if you like.
