A Brief History of Our Brands

Raley’s owns and operates 129 grocery stores and 13 Aisle 1 Fuel Stations across northern California and Nevada, all of them known for their high quality products, exceptional customer service and convenience.

Raley’s was founded by Tom Raley in 1935 in Placerville, Ca., and has since grown to include 78 stores operating under the flagship brand. In 1992, Raley’s acquired Bel Air Markets, a 20-store chain founded in 1955 by the Wong family and operating in the Sacramento metro region. In 1998, Raley’s purchased the 20-store Nob Hill Foods chain of stores from the Bonfante family, who operated the stores throughout California’s East Bay, South Bay and Central Coast regions.

Raley’s added to its grocery portfolio with the acquisition of eight Food Source stores, which offer low prices on quality products in a warehouse format. Raley’s 13 Aisle 1 Fuel Stations are full-service destinations for fuel, car wash and convenience items.

In 2018, Market 5-ONE-5 opened in downtown Sacramento. The independently managed store, owned by Raley’s owner Michael Teel, emphasizes wholesome eating in a neighborhood market setting.
