Did you know that Raley’s has a non-profit that supports the food banks in our region? It’s called Food For Families. Founded in 1986 by Joyce Raley Teel, Food For Families has a unique model for how it addresses food insecurity issues. Food For Families partners with county level food banks across the Raley’s footprint to distribute donations in a localized way. Plus, Raley’s absorbs all the operating costs of Food For Families so that 100% of donations you give in your community directly support your neighbors in need.
Each year, we ramp up our efforts with a Holiday Drive in hopes of giving millions of nutritious meals to those in need in our region—and yes, that is how big the food gap is. This campaign supports more than 1.4 million food insecure people within our company footprint. In order to reach these big goals, we gather donation dollars, purchase food at wholesale costs and distribute items based on where donations came from to their respective local food banks.
Food For Families puts ears on the ground to determine what each food bank needs and adjusts the items that go in our bags each year based on community feedback. This year, we’ll supply more breakfast cereals, pasta sauce and canned fruits and vegetables making up the bag contents.
You’ll notice that 100% of the holiday bag items are Raley’s Brand. That’s because we’re able to get the best prices on the foods that are donated by supplying our own products at cost. In fact, every item going to the food banks this year qualifies for at least one of our exclusive Shelf Guide icons, such as Clean Label, Gut Health or Plant Based. Our goal is not only to provide the most food we can for the amount of donations we collect, but also to ensure that we are all giving the gift of good nutrition.
