Our Food For Families Holiday Drive

Too many people in our communities struggle to put food on the table. In the seemingly prosperous state of California, nearly 20% of children and 12% of the overall population don’t know where their next meal will come from. And where federal nutrition programs fall short, food banks can help fill the meal gap.

Did you know that Raley’s has a non-profit arm that supports the food banks in our region? It’s called Food For Families. Founded in 1986 by Joyce Raley Teel, Food For Families has a unique model for how it addresses food insecurity issues. Rather than simply donating to large regional or national organizations that feed the hungry, Food For Families partners with food banks in each community where you’ll find our stores in order to distribute donations in a localized way. Plus, we absorb all the operating costs of our charity so that 100% of donations you give in your community directly support your neighbors in need.

Each year, we ramp up our efforts with a Holiday Drive in hopes of giving 4.2 million nutritious meals to those in need in our region—and yes, that is how big the food gap is. This campaign supports more than 1.4 million food insecure people within our company footprint. In order to reach these big goals, we gather donation dollars, purchase food at wholesale costs and distribute items based on where donations came from to their respective local food banks. By employing these tactics, we are able to stretch each $10 donation to provide 20 nutritious meals.

We also put ears on the ground to determine what food bank recipients actually need and adjust the items that go in our bags each year based on community feedback. This year, we’ll supply more breakfast cereals, pasta sauce and canned fruits and vegetables making up the bag contents.

You’ll notice that 100% of the holiday bag items are Raley’s Brand. That’s because we’re able to get the best prices on the foods that are donated by supplying our own products at cost. In fact, all but two of the items going into our bags this year qualify for at least one of our exclusive Shelf Guide icons, such as Clean Label, Gut Health or Plant Based. Our goal is not only to provide the most food we can for the amount of donations we collect and give from our own company, but also to ensure that we’re giving the gift of good nutrition.
