Durst Organic Growers: Esparto, CA
Just north of Esparto, California, Jim and Deborah Durst grow organic petite Sugar Pie pumpkins. Their pumpkins are so sweet that the sugars ooze out of the cut end of the stems at harvest. Jim says the secret to his pumpkins’ sweetness is the way they’re cultivated. “Growing them organically gives them a higher sugar content and a richer flavor,” he says. In addition to pumpkins, the Dursts also grow asparagus, heirloom tomatoes, melons, peppers and of course squash – all organically.
