In an ongoing effort to infuse life with health and wellness, Raley’s Family of Fine Stores has increased continued support of the Center for Land based Learning.
The West Sacramento based grocery chain has donated $25,000 toward the ground breaking of that city’s newest urban farm. The Farm at the Barn will increase access to fresh local produce, promote community sustainability, encourage volunteerism and stimulate educational opportunities. A percentage of the produce grown will benefit Food For Families and create a built in market for beginning farmers to sell their crops.
“Our partnership with the Center for Land-Based Learning provides a wrap-around approach to Raley’s support of the entire food system,” said Becca Whitman, Executive Director of Food For Families. “By working together, we are strengthening the market channel for farmers, increasing agricultural workforce development opportunities, and providing our Food For Families partners fresh fruits and vegetables for the food insecure in our communities.”
The Barn is West Sacramento’s newest indoor/outdoor culinary and events venue, located on the riverfront. Drake’s Brewing Co. has been chosen as the permanent tenant and operator of the Barn. The restaurant is expected to open in Spring 2017. The daily cuisine will feature seasonal produce grown at the Barn farm.
The project supports Land-Based Learning’s mission to inspire and motivate people of all ages, especially youth, to promote a healthy interplay between agriculture, nature and society through their own actions and as leaders in their communities. In 2014, the Center for Land-Based Learning started West Sacramento’s first urban farm at the corner of 5th & C St. There are now four urban farms within the city, all of them are farmed by beginning farmers. The Farm at the Barn will be the fifth urban farm site, consuming two, half-acre parcels. Patrons can expect to see an on site farm stand, weekly farmer’s market and other farm and food related events as soon as summer 2017.
“It’s exciting to be a part of creating farms within the city limits”, says Mary Kimball, executive director for the Center for Land-Based Learning. “Urban farming, especially here at the Barn, makes the farm-to-fork experience visible and real for those living here. That is our goal, to educate folks about where their food comes from and to make it accessible, fresh from the farm”.
Dinner at the Barn, a fundraiser for the Center for Land-Based Learning, was held September 11 with a cadre of supporters from near and far in attendance. Funds raised during the live auction are slated to be used to get the Farm at the Barn up and running by Summer 2017.
“The ongoing support of Raley’s Family of Fine Stores to the Center for Land-Based Learning is exactly the type of civic interaction that the city of West Sacramento seeks to foster,” says West Sacramento Mayor Christopher Cabaldon. “The strong partnership between the city and the Center for Land-Based Learning’s West Sacramento Urban Farm Program sends signals throughout the community that we are dedicated to nurturing connections between residents, businesses and non-profits to improve the quality of life for all”.
