Community Leader Receives the 2008 “Spirit of Giving” Award
By Amy Johnston | Tuesday May 27, 2008
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Raley’s Owner and Co-Chairman, Joyce Raley Teel, and Raley’s Family of Fine Stores, received the 2008 “Spirit of Giving” award today from the Sacramento Chapter of The Salvation Army for exemplary community service work and leadership.
“The Salvation Army is pleased to honor Joyce Raley Teel,” said Capt. John Brackenbury, divisional secretary for program and Sacramento County coordinator. “Joyce was chosen because of her tireless work and dedication in this community. It goes without saying – she is one incredible person.”
Joyce grew up in her father Tom Raley’s stores, often helping out with inventory, going on buying trips with her parents and working in different areas of the stores. She continues to be very involved in the family business, currently serving as the Co-Chairman of the Board of Directors.
To recognize colleague achievements throughout the company, she implemented a “Years of Service” program and commissioned the writing of Raley’s history book, “Raley’s, A Family Store” among other programs.
In 1986, Joyce established the Food For Families program, providing food assistance to hungry families in the communities served by Raley’s, Bel Air Markets, Nob Hill Foods and Food Source stores. To date, the program has raised in excess of $20 million and more than 10 million pounds of dry groceries to serve local food banks.
Recognizing the value of education, Joyce launched The Joyce Raley Teel Scholarship program in 1999 to assist Raley’s employees and their eligible family members in their educational pursuits. For the past ten years, the program has awarded more than $238,000 in scholarship funds to deserving students.Joyce continues the legacy of community giving that her parents instilled within her since she was a young girl. In 1995, she established the Thomas P. Raley Foundation in honor of her father, which supports a variety of causes. Joyce is a patron of the arts community and has been instrumental in raising funds to expand the Crocker Art Museum. She recently made the lead contribution toward the Studio for the Performing Arts facility in memory of her mother, E. Claire Raley.
Joyce and Raley’s Family of Fine Stores will continue to support the many neighborhoods, organizations and customers served by 130 stores throughout Northern California and Nevada.
