Raley’s Named Independent Retailer of the Year for 2017

World Class Service, Reimagining Customer Experience

Raley’s has been named 2017 Independent Retailer of the Year by Grocery Headquarters magazine, continuing a trend of receiving national accolades for recent strategic changes, ongoing enhancements to customers’ shopping experiences, and a continued passion for changing the way the world eats, one plate at a time.

In announcing Raley’s as the 2017 Independent Retailer of the year, Grocery Headquarters cited Raley’s world-class customer service, clean and easy-to-shop stores and its perception by customers as the gold standard for grocery retailing in Northern California and Nevada.

“Our choice this year was easy,” said Seth Mendelson, Publisher & Editorial Director of Grocery Headquarters. “Raley’s has a long history of serving consumers and a broad selection of quality products. Raley’s stands out among its competition by making consumers’ shopping trips enjoyable and full of inspiration.”

Raley’s vision statement to infuse life with health and happiness is transforming the organization and leading in-store changes. As the company celebrates it’s 82nd year in operation, Raley’s growth strategy is moving the brand into new markets in the greater Sacramento region, Bay Area and Nevada. The company is expected to open four new stores in the next twelve months, including locations in Sacramento (Howe & Fair Oaks Blvd.), Rancho Cordova, Rancho Murieta, and Santa Clara. Collectively the expansions will create over 300 jobs.

Additionally, Raley’s is displaying innovation and a fearless mindset for reimagining grocery shopping with a new concept store – Market 5-ONE-5, transforming the grocery experience to a streamlined product selection and focusing on organics, nutrition and education. Market 5-ONE-5 will open in Midtown Sacramento in late spring.

Raley’s has also received recent recognition by Wine Enthusiast magazine as National Retailer of the year, which noted the company’s courage to renovate its wine and spirits

category and turn it into a thriving business. The honor is particularly highly regarded because the nominees are selected by an impartial panel of experts from the industry.

“We are honored to receive such prestigious industry recognition for our store experience and team members’ passion,” said Keith Knopf, Raley’s, Chief Operating Officer. “Our ongoing commitment to our customers drives in-store changes. We are committed to providing personalized service and supporting our customers’ individual health journeys.”

In 2016, Raley’s implemented numerous chain-wide transformations geared toward enhancing life with health and wellness – “Better for You” check stands, free fruit for kids, and the elimination of private label brand soda that contained high-fructose corn syrup and artificial colors and flavors. In addition to these changes in the store experience, Raley’s launched their “Let’s Begin” campaign on Raleys.com, which educates customers on how to make more informed decisions when purchasing food.
