Company Uses NCR Technology to Conserve Resources
By Amy Davis | Tuesday January 5, 2010
West Sacramento, Calif. – Raley’s aims to save the equivalent of nearly 700 trees per year in paper used for receipts and save customers time at checkout.
Two-sided thermal printers and paper – patented technology from NCR Corporation – are designed to reduce paper consumption by allowing simultaneous printing on both sides of a receipt. Raley’s Family of Fine Stores has deployed the new printers at all 129 Raley’s, Bel Air Markets and Nob Hill Foods stores in Northern California and Northern Nevada.
“NCR’s research shows that two-sided printing can reduce a store’s receipt paper usage by up to 40%,” said Amy Davis, Raley’s Communications Specialist. “When factored by all our Raley’s, Bel Air and Nob Hill Foods stores, that’s a savings of about 200,000 paper rolls a year. It’s the latest program we’ve launched to decrease our impact on the earth and bring innovative, sustainable solutions to our everyday work practices.”
Using less paper with two-sided receipt-printing technology means fewer raw materials are needed during the manufacturing process. Less energy, fuel and packaging material is consumed during production and distribution, resulting in fewer harmful greenhouse gas emissions and a reduction in waste that eventually ends up in landfills.
In addition to environmental benefits, the two-sided receipt technology is helping Raley’s further enhance operational efficiency and customer satisfaction. For example, fewer paper roll changes are needed and the receipts take less time to print, reducing delays at checkout.
“Raley’s is recognized for the many concrete steps it has taken to improve and enhance the environment,” said John Saccomanno, NCR Director of Food Industry Marketing. “Their decision to deploy two-sided printing from NCR is further evidence of this corporate commitment, and we commend Raley’s for their leadership in championing sustainability.”
