EPA’s GreenChill Partnership Award Raley’s as New Member

Media Center: Press Release:  Raley's Receives New Partner Award from EPA's GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership

West Sacramento, Calif. – Raley’s Family of Fine Stores joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership in January 2009 and voluntarily committed to reducing refrigerant emissions to help fight climate change and protect the earth’s ozone layer. Just eight months later, today Raley’s received a GreenChill New Partner Award at the Food Marketing Institute’s Sustainability Summit, held in San Francisco, Calif., for the company’s steadfast commitment to decreasing refrigerant emissions.

"Even in Raley's first year as a GreenChill Partner, the company has already taken the lead in the number of GreenChill-certified stores," said Keilly Witman of EPA's GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration partnership. "Raley's Family of Fine Stores has received two gold-level store certification awards and two silver-level store certification awards, proof that Raley's takes the GreenChill mission to fight climate change and protect the ozone layer very seriously."

“It’s an incredible honor to be recognized as a leader in the industry for our efficient refrigeration systems – Raley’s, Petaluma and Nob Hill Foods, San Jose (on Snell Ave.) earning gold certification and Raley’s, San Pablo and Nob Hill Foods, Mountain View earning silver certification from the EPA,” said Randy Walthers, Raley’s Energy Manager. “We look forward to continuing our work with the GreenChill Partnership on promoting green technologies, strategies, and practices to protect the ozone layer and significantly reduce greenhouse gases.”

As a new partner, Raley’s has pledged to:
· Go above and beyond regulatory requirements by measuring and tracking refrigerant emissions that affect climate change and the earth's ozone layer, and then setting reduction targets for these emissions.

· Participate in government/industry research initiatives to assess the performance of cutting edge, "green" refrigeration technologies.

· Participate in committees that draft best practice guidelines on advanced technologies, strategies, and practices that aid the supermarket industry in reducing its impact on the ozone layer and climate change.

· To counteract the depletion of stratospheric ozone, which protects earth's citizens from the sun's ultraviolet radiation, partners guarantee to use only ozone-friendly alternatives and advanced refrigeration technologies in all new and remodeled stores.

According to the EPA, GreenChill partners in the food retail business have refrigerant emissions rates nearly 50% lower than the EPA-estimated industry average. These partners are responsible for a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from refrigerants totaling 2.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide — equivalent to the annual emissions of 500,000 cars. In addition, the EPA estimates that GreenChill’s founding partners saved almost $13 million in operating costs by reducing refrigerant emissions.
