Regional Raley’s Reach Winners Announced

Media Center: Press Release:  Regional Raley's Reach Winners Announced
$50,000 in Grants Awarded to Five Schools Throughout Northern California and Nevada

WEST SACRAMENTO, CA— The Raley’s Reach program attracted 128 nominations and more than 65,000 online votes as schools throughout Northern California and Nevada competed for five $10,000 grants to put toward their back-to-school needs.

Continuing to give back to the community, locally-owned and family-operated Raley’s Family of Fine Stores partnered with Unilever to provide a total of $50,000 in grants to schools in five specified regions, which is the largest Raley’s Reach cycle to date. PTAs, booster clubs, parents and community members within each Reach-Region submitted nominations and votes. This year, social networks like Facebook and Twitter were the most popular means for spreading the word and encouraging daily voting for the school of their choice.

The top five schools within each Reach-Region that will receive a $10,000 grant are as follows:

Region 1 – Northern Nevada Region: Incline Elementary School
Earning a total of 1,219 votes, Incline Elementary School is located in Incline Village, Nev. and plans to enhance its science and outdoor education program. The K-5 school will use these funds during the 2012-13 school year to implement and facilitate a school-wide science curriculum that includes science experiments, a science fair and technology integration opportunities. These enhancements will benefit the student experience and provide much needed support to teachers in this important subject.

Region 2 – North Foothill Region: Sierra View Elementary School
Earning a total of 4,123 votes, Sierra View Elementary School is a K-6 school in Chico, Calif. They recognize the need for updated technology and aim to equip classrooms with document cameras, digital projectors, smart-boards and computers. By purchasing new technology, the school hopes to increase the effectiveness and impact of the lesson plans that are taught to prepare students for academic success in today’s digital era.

Region 3 – Greater Sacramento Region: Kit Carson Middle School
Earning a total of 4,418 votes, Kit Carson Middle School is located in Sacramento, Calif. and prides itself on having a strong foundation in college and career preparation. The school plans to use these funds to support college outreach and visitation efforts to local campuses, such as California State University, Sacramento; University of California, Davis; California State University, Chico; and others. With a sustained focus on improving student achievement and an understanding of the rapidly evolving nature of our nation’s workforce, Kit Carson Middle School’s motto is “The Road to College Begins Here.”

Region 4 – Central Valley Region: Aspire University Charter School
Earning a total of 2,419 votes, Aspire University Charter School in Modesto, Calif. plans to use the grant funds to update and enhance K-5 classrooms with age-appropriate technology. The new hardware and software purchased will be used in the 2012-13 school year and will improve the learning experience of the school’s more than 250 students.

Region 5 – Greater Bay Region: Penngrove Elementary School
Earning a total of 6,856 votes, Penngrove Elementary School is located in Penngrove, Calif. and received the most votes overall across the five regions. The school included a link to the Raley’s Reach voting page on its web site, which made daily voting easy and convenient for parents and staff. The funds will be used to construct a permanent shade structure over the school’s outdoor eating area to protect students from the elements while they eat their lunches. They plan to have the structure installed prior to the end of the 2012-13 school year.

“The vote counts in each region were closer than ever this year and each of these winning schools made a great effort in competing for these much needed grants,” said Jennie Teel-Wolter, Raley’s Community Relations Manager. “Many of the entries in this Raley’s Reach cycle expressed a need for technology upgrades, so we’re thrilled to be able to help support this important area that is costly to schools and often has a limited budget and funding resources.”

The Raley’s Reach program was first launched in May of 2010 in honor of Raley’s 75th Anniversary. To date, Raley’s Reach has awarded more than $100,000 in grants to 20 community projects throughout Northern California and Nevada.

Raley's is a privately owned supermarket chain with headquarters in West Sacramento, CA. The company is comprised of four chains — Raley's, Bel Air Markets, Nob Hill Foods and Food Source — located in Northern California and Nevada.
