From Hunger to Hope: Raley’s Food For Families Donates 2.2 Million Pounds of Food

Media Center: Press Release:  From Hunger to Hope: Raley's Food For Families Donates 2.2 Million Pounds of Food

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif.– No family should go hungry at the holidays. Thanks to the generosity of Raley’s customers, employees and community partners, Raley’s Food For Families surpassed its goal of raising 2 million pounds of food in Northern California and Northern Nevada through its annual holiday bag campaign.

The 2,218,971 pounds of food beat totals from the previous three years and set a new bar for 2014.

“We’re touched by the generosity of so many hearts, near and far,” said Jennie Teel-Wolter, Raley’s community relations manager. “Thank you for helping put dinner on tables that need it most, especially during the holidays.”

Once again doubling each customer’s gift by matching all donations, Raley’s made giving easy for busy shoppers during its 27th holiday bag campaign, drawing more Facebook and mobile text donations than in year’s past, in addition to in-store donations.

Each holiday bag provided 18 meals and included more fresh groceries than ever before, like carrots, green salad and potatoes in addition to pantry staples like whole wheat pasta and tuna. Seventy-two regional food banks distribute the 89,308 holiday bags purchased to benefit local families.

Many customers also supported the cause with the help of a plush, cuddly pair named Ginger and Nutmeg, a holiday stuffed bear and dog. With 100% of proceeds going to Food For Families, Ginger and Nutmeg also provided a new way for parents to talk with their children about the importance of giving and how one small stuffed animal can help make a big difference.

On top of the 2.2 million pounds of food, Raley’s once again donated 112,500 pounds of fresh turkeys, chickens and hams, which provides 99,328 meals.

To date, Food For Families has raised more than $29 million and donated more than 19 million pounds of dry groceries to food banks in our communities. The program was established in 1986 and is unique in the United States in that Raley’s absorbs all administrative expenses ensuring that 100% of every donation reaches local families in need.
