Natural Foods:  Ways to "Lighten Up" for the New Year!
Well for Life

It's a new year, and after a season of pies and cocktails and Grandma's family recipe biscuits, you may be looking for ways to lighten up your New Year.

 1. Drink Up!  Water is always the best - no calories, no sugar and one of our most important nutrients. If you find water too boring, try a bubbly sparkling water, like Ayala's Sparkling Cinnamon Sugar. A plus? Some studies suggest cinnamon is a metabolism booster.

2. Clean Up! Look for "cleansing" beverages that help replenish and refresh, like  Kevita Probiotic Lemon and Cayenne beverage. Research indicates that probiotics may support immune and digestive health, and this lightly sweetened spicy option is also low calories and low glycemic, too. If you prefer a warmer, soothing drink, try Triple Leaf Detox Tea, a blend of traditional Chinese herbs.

2. Lighten up! — Focus on minimally processed foods, such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and avoiding processed foods high in sugar and white flour. If you've ever heard the term "clean eating," it's based around this principle. Clean eating isn't about counting calories or giving up food groups, it's built around healthier alternatives. Get the scoop on clean eating here.

3. Get help! — If you're not getting everything you need from your diet, check out the wide array of supplements, from critical nutrients to specific conditions. You'll find everything from digestive relief to immune support, like  Oregon’s Wild Harvest Milk Thistle and Dandelion , which harnesses the antioxidant power of milk thistle.

4. Explore Gluten-Free! — You don't have to be a celiac, or have a gluten allergy, to add more gluten-free options in the mix. Try adding more gluten-free grains such as Quinoa, Oats, Rice, Millet, and Amaranth. You can also opt for gluten-free snacks like Kind Healthy Grain Bars and Barefruit snacks, or check out our Something Extra for great recipe inspiration.

5. Ease Up! — The best way to start the year is to try with simple changes: getting a sparkling water instead of a soda, adding some quinoa to tonight's dinner instead of pasta, adding a great tea to your daily regimen. You don't have to change everything at once! But with a few tweaks, you may find yourself feeling healthier and happier in 2014.

The suggestion to replace soda with sparkling water is a good one. It takes time to get used to the flavor but you can lose a lot of weight this way.
