Brandied Apple Pie with Walnut Streusel
Prepared pastry for single crust pie
1/2 cup brandy
1/4 cup honey
2 tbsp. butter
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground cardamom
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
3 lbs. tart green apples, peeled, cored and sliced 1/4-inch thick
2 tbsp. flour
2/3 cup flour
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 tbsp. sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 cup butter, melted
1/2 cup walnuts, chopped

Prep: 20 minutes Cook: about 1 hour Serves: 8

1. Preheat oven to 425°F. Line a 9-inch pie dish with pastry dough, turn under excess dough and flute decoratively.

2. Bring brandy, honey, butter and spices to a boil in a small saucepan; reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring frequently. Place apples in a large bowl and stir in brandy mixture; stir in flour, then pour into pastry lined dish.

3. To prepare topping, stir together flour, brown sugar, sugar and cinnamon in a medium bowl with a fork. Stir in butter and walnuts, then sprinkle over apples.

4. Bake for 10 minutes, then reduce heat to 350°F and bake for 50 minutes more, tenting with foil if top browns too quickly. Pie is best served the same day it’s made.
