Kristen's Candy Cane Cookies

Kristen's Candy Cane Cookies
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup powdered sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 tsp. almond extract
1 tsp. vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. red food coloring
1/4 cup finely crushed candy canes (or peppermint candies)
1/4 cup sugar
Prep time: 45 minutes, Cook time: 10 to 12 minutes Makes:
about 24

1. Preheat oven to 325ºF. Stir together candy and sugar in a
small bowl; set aside.
2. Cream together butter, shortening and powdered sugar; mix in
egg and extracts.
3. Stir in flour and salt. Divide dough into 2 equal pieces and
blend food coloring into only one piece.
4. Shape dough into 1/4-by-4-inch ropes. Lightly press together
one white and one red rope; twist together and bend into a candy
cane shape.
5. Place cookies on ungreased baking sheets and bake for
10 to 12 minutes. While cookies are warm, sprinkle with candy
cane mixture.

Tip! This dough is very delicate, so take your time
when making these cookies.
