Irish Corned Beef Stew

Irish Corned Beef Stew
1 package corned beef (including spice packet)
1/3 cup flour
1/4 cup butter
1 1/2 lb. red potatoes (about 3 medium) peeled and cubed
1 (12- oz.) bottle Guinness Extra Stout
1 (10.5- oz.) can Campbell's Condensed Beef Broth
2 cups carrots peeled and sliced
2 cups parsnips peeled and sliced
1 1/2 cups water
1 very large onion, cubed
2 cups 1-inch slices fresh cabbage, coarsely chopped

Prep: 15 minutes, Cook: about 3 hours, Serves: 8

Cut away any large pieces of fat from corned beef and cut meat into 1-inch cubes; dredge well in flour. Melt butter in a large stockpot. Add corned beef (including any excess flour); cook over medium-high heat, stirring frequently, until browned on all sides. Add spice packet and all remaining ingredients except cabbage to pot and stir well. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer, covered, for 2 to 2 1/2 hours or until meat is tender. Add cabbage and cook for 10 minutes more.

How about carrying gluten-free stout and other GF beers so we can make a GF version of this stew and make a toast or two!

I was interested until I saw "180 g carbohydrate" per serving !!!! WHOA !!!! Not a dish for diabetics.

I purchased one of the Raleys "corned beef" rounds (about 3 lbs). I prepared it as I always fix corned beef I soaked overnight in the frig covered with water. Drained and covered meat cooked in 300 degree convection oven for 3 hours. Just pulled it out and it is dry even though there was lots of liquid (at least 3 cups) and tasted the meat& OMG it is so dry just like sawdust absoultely NO flavor. it doesn't resemble corned beef it looks like dried out Pot Roast. My dinner is ruined and I haven't even finished my vegetables. I don't know what we will have for dinner. 3 of us ladies asked the meat dept worker if this was the same as a brisket since they didn't have the familir Harris Ranch brand and he assured us this was the same . NO IT IS NOT. very disappointed and hunry for corned beef and cabbage dinner.

I am sorry to hear about the quality of Raley's corned beef you recently purchased. The product is already pumped with a 20% solution so soaking it in water just water logged it, which removes the flavor and moisture. Convection oven cooking for 3 hours probably dried out the product, depending on the weight of the meat. Since Corned Beef Round is definitely leaner than Brisket, it will dry out much faster and easier than the traditional Brisket cuts.
